Gianina Cărbunariu

Theatre director and playwright, associate professor at the Faculty of Theatre, Babeș-Bolyai University Cluj. Between 2017 and 2024 she was General Director of the Youth Theatre and curator of the Theatre Festival in Piatra Neamț.

In Romania she collaborates with both independent and state theatres (Odeon Theatre, Teatrul Mic, Excelsior Theatre, Nottara Theatre in Bucharest, TNRS in Sibiu, Youth Theatre in Piatra Neamț).

She has worked as a theatre director in European theatres including the Kammerspiele in Munich, the National Theatre in Madrid, the Contemporary Theatre in Szczecin, the State Theatre in Stuttgart, Teatro delle Passione in Modena, and the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava. She has been selected twice for the official programme of the Avignon Festival (with “Solitaritate”, staged at TNRS Sibiu, and “Tigru”, a production of the Royal Dramatic Theatre of Sweden).

In 2025, Matca published “Va urma,” a volume containing 10 of the plays she has written over the last 15 years.
